Overview

Skin cancer care at PS Dermatology

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and the vast majority are highly treatable when caught early. At PS Dermatology, skin cancer detection and treatment is one of our deepest specialties. Our board-certified dermatologists perform full-body skin exams, biopsy suspicious lesions, and treat all three major skin cancers: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

For cancers in cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas, we offer Mohs micrographic surgery, the gold standard for skin cancer removal, with cure rates above 99% for primary basal cell carcinomas. We also help patients understand and monitor pre-cancers like actinic keratoses and atypical moles, and we partner closely with your primary care team.

Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Mohs surgery and why is it considered the gold standard?
Mohs micrographic surgery removes skin cancer one thin layer at a time, examining each layer under a microscope before taking another. This lets the surgeon spare the maximum amount of healthy tissue while ensuring all the cancer is removed. Cure rates exceed 99% for primary basal cell carcinoma, the highest of any skin cancer treatment. It is especially valuable in sensitive areas like the face, ears, and hands.
Are skin cancer screenings covered by insurance?
Yes. Annual full-body skin examinations are typically covered as preventive care by most insurance plans, especially for patients with risk factors (history of significant sun exposure, fair skin, family history, prior skin cancers, atypical moles). For patients with no specific risk factors, coverage varies, so check with your insurer if you're unsure.
How often should I have a full-body skin exam?
Most adults should have a full-body skin check at least once a year. Patients with risk factors (many moles, fair skin, family history of melanoma, prior skin cancers, or significant sun exposure) may need exams every 6 months. Between visits, do a monthly self-check looking for new spots or any moles that are changing in size, color, or shape.
How long do Mohs results take?
Mohs results are available during the procedure itself; that is the whole point of the technique. Each tissue layer is processed and read while you wait, typically 30 to 60 minutes per layer. Most Mohs cases are completed in a single visit, with reconstruction (closure) done the same day. The total appointment usually runs 2 to 4 hours from start to finish.
What's the recovery like after Mohs surgery?
Recovery depends on the size and location of the surgery and how the wound is closed. Smaller wounds may need only a few stitches and heal in 1–2 weeks. Larger reconstructions, especially on the face, may have visible swelling and bruising for 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to office work within a few days. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions and follow up to monitor healing.
What should I do if I notice a new or changing spot between visits?
Don't wait for your next annual exam. Call us, since most concerning spots can be evaluated within a few days. The classic warning signs are the "ABCDEs": Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colors, Diameter larger than a pencil eraser, and Evolving (changing). A sore that doesn't heal in 4 weeks is also a reason to come in. Early detection makes a real difference.
