Patient Questions

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between medical and cosmetic dermatology?
Medical dermatology is the diagnosis and treatment of disease: conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin infections, and skin cancer. It is typically covered by insurance and addresses symptoms or health concerns. Cosmetic dermatology focuses on appearance: smoothing wrinkles, treating sun damage, improving texture or pigmentation. The same dermatologist can do both, and many patients work on medical concerns and cosmetic goals in parallel.
Do you accept insurance for medical dermatology visits?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans for medical dermatology, including Aetna, Cigna, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Medicare, and many others. Coverage for specific procedures depends on your plan and the medical necessity of the visit. We recommend calling our office or checking with your insurer before your first appointment so we can confirm what is covered.
How quickly can I get an appointment for a new skin concern?
We typically offer same-week appointments for new patients and urgent concerns, including suspicious moles, rashes that are not responding to over-the-counter treatment, and other issues that should not wait. Call us at 732-443-3975 or book online to see current availability. For changing or rapidly growing spots, let us know when you call so we can prioritize scheduling.
Do you treat children as well as adults?
Yes. We treat pediatric dermatology concerns including pediatric atopic dermatitis (eczema), molluscum contagiosum, warts, acne in teens, birthmarks, and a wide range of childhood skin conditions. Our office is welcoming to younger patients, and we tailor treatment plans for sensitive young skin.
Will I need a biopsy at my first visit?
Sometimes, but only if your dermatologist sees something that needs lab confirmation. Many conditions can be diagnosed clinically (by sight and history alone). When a biopsy is needed, it is a quick in-office procedure under local anesthesia: a small sample is taken and sent to a dermatopathologist. We discuss every biopsy with you before it happens, and results typically come back within a week.
How do I know if my skin issue needs urgent care?
Call us promptly for: a mole or spot that is changing in size, color, or shape; a sore that will not heal after several weeks; severe pain, redness, or rapid spread of a rash; or any lesion that is bleeding without injury. For most chronic conditions (mild acne, scattered eczema, dandruff), a regular appointment is fine, but when in doubt, call. We would rather see you and confirm it is nothing than miss something.
